Honorable Mention - Jennifer Biggs

ANNABEL LEE; REVISED

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a girl there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to take my hair and fingernail clippings
And build a shrine to me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But I carved her name into my arm—
'I and my Annabel Lee'—
With a love that our parents proclaimed
'Unnatural, Unhealthy!'

And that was the reason that long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
Doctors in white came by night
Examining my Annabel Lee;
So that the shrinks and specialists came,
And bore her away from me
To shut her up in a padded room
In this kingdom by the sea.

I stood outside her window each night,
Until a restraining order twas placed against me:
Yes! That was the reason (as all men know, in this kingdom by the sea)
That I'm looking at five years in prison
For loving too strongly my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of those who were far saner than we—
And neither the patrol officer at court
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever keep her from hiding her meds
Under her mattress and thinking of me.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the mentally unstable Annabel Lee;
Her garbage I stole, is still beneath my pillow
I touch it and think of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, my parents, tired they grow, to military school I go,
For loving and living and dreaming and scheming
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

About Jennifer Biggs
Jeni is 17 years old and a senior at Stebbins High School in Dayton, Ohio. She owes her success as a poet to her mentor, Ken Haponek, and his brilliantly taught creative writing course. Maybe now he will see Jeni is not to be censored, and he will cease giving her detentions for her creative outbursts. She adores to write, anything and everything. Jeni likes the ocean, anything pink, coke with lime, and a really great zombie movie. She hopes to pursue a career in writing someday. She also really likes polo shirts and was happy to hear she won one in the contest, along with 38 dollars, definite plus.
