ELEGY FOR A COFFEE POT

Thy babbling reservoir sighed the dawning day,
Thy drip-drip-drip whispered o'er the lea,
Into the kitchen I did plod my sleepy way,
And leave the solemn darkness behind me.

But, lo! Fades the glimmering red power light,
And all the air a hopeless stillness holds,
Save the refrigerator's electric might,
And the droning purr of a distant Olds.

Oh, hot-water reservoir-style home brewer,
That delivered me quality coffee
To far higher standards than the newer,
In just three minutes. I will sorely miss thee.

Save me from the yonder discount tower,
The Brauns and Black and Deckers that there reign,
Such as I will browse the Internet bower,
And a new high-performance Bunn attain.

Sent as a joke to Poetry.com, this poem was a finalist in the 2007 Wergle Flomp humor poetry contest sponsored by Winning Writers. It is a parody of Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard".
