Contests : Tom Howard/John H. Reid Poetry Contest : Past Winners : 2007 : Commended
FOR LANDON
Who died before the Madden Basketball Playoffs
Punch the buttons
on the phone.
Halfway through I forget
You can't play Madden Basketball
today so I do.
Set on two-player I
play your game for you.
I think you let me win again.
Pull into your driveway
just to see how it feels.
311 is on the radio. We
jam. I sing loud. We
stage dive. You go first.
You break my fall.
I punch the wall.
This poem won a Commended award in the 2007 Tom Howard/John H. Reid Poetry Contest sponsored by Tom Howard Books. Author Aline Taylor received a $50 award. Winning Writers assists this contest. Copyright is reserved to the author.
Ms. Taylor writes, "The poem was written about my son's best friend who was killed 6 years ago in a car accident at the age of 19. The poem is written in my son's voice. Landon was an avid hockey player, and the $50 will be donated to the hockey program his parents started at our sons' high school."
