THINKING OF SUSAN

You announced you were a lesbian
Just before the waitress appeared:
"Would you like more tea?"

We giggled threw our straws,
Making bubbles
Which reminded us of passing gas.

We thought this might be a phase
One of those experimental things
Like growing mold on bread

But then Christmas time came
You were not sure of
Of exactly just the right gift

In the end, you made your lover
A belt buckle
molded in the shape of your vagina.

And we knew you were serious.

Sent as a joke to Poetry.com, this poem was a finalist in the 2007 Wergle Flomp humor poetry contest sponsored by Winning Writers.
