UPON READING YOUR POEM

My sensibility is greater than your sensibility,
ha, ha, my metaphors are fresher than yours
my images are sharper
my enjambment jams
my evocativeness is more
evocative than yours
my meaning is deeper than your meaning
because my intention is clearer.
I have more miles to go before I sleep
than you do
and my fog sits on little cat feet
while yours just drifts off into the ether.
My April is crueler than yours
my words are better than your words,
mine have more to say;
I understand place better than
you understand place
because I live in a nicer place
than you live.
My ability to go beyond place
is farther ranging than is yours
and so much more depends on
my red wheelbarrow
than on your white chickens
(and I have more degrees than you do)
also more inadequacies.

This poem was a finalist in the 2010 Wergle Flomp humor poetry contest sponsored by Winning Writers.

About Jackie Zollo Brooks
Jackie received her B.A. in Drama at Tufts. Her long acting career ended when a Shakespearean touring company found profit in children's shows, forcing Jackie to play Max in a bear suit in "Where the Wild Things Are".

Moving on, she fell headlong into the acid bath at Harvard University. Nine years later she finished her doctoral dissertation. Exhausted, Dr. Jackie joined the Peace Corps to teach in Madagascar. She had thirty-three shots for diseases before going to Africa and believes she will never die.

Selected poems were published in 2009 by Wild Leaf Press in New Haven. Her novel, The Ravenala, is out in the mail. Recent short stories have been published in Glimpse and The Serving House Journal.
